Noosa’s Rich History

The name Noosa came from an Aboriginal word meaning “shadows” or “shade” and most likely refers to the tall forests in the area. In 1828, David Bracefell was the first white man to visit the area and Noosa’s early wealth came not long after from the timber and milling industries.

Timber was needed to build houses for the rapidly expanding population and Noosa provided an abundance of highly sought after timber, particularly red cedar. It wasn’t until the late 1920s that tourism began to be developed.

In the 1970s Noosa brought the elegance and sophistication of big city living to the Queensland coast. It changed from a quiet seaside town with a few surfers and casual holidaymakers into a destination which attracted wealthy Melbourne and Sydney people wanting an upmarket Australian holiday place.

After Noosa Sound was built in the 1970s, the real estate market boomed and Noosa Heads became even more fashionable.

Today Hastings Street, Noosa’s main street, boasts cafes, galleries, boutique fashion houses, restaurants and holidaymakers prepared to spend. Noosa has become a premier Australia holiday destination.
